Gate 9: Rideout Road
Redstone’s main gate is open 24 hours a day. Its northern location makes it an important reference point for many buyers evaluating Madison, west Huntsville and northern routes.
Comparing Madison, South Huntsville, Jones Valley, Harvest, Athens and Hampton Cove? The right choice depends on more than miles from the installation. Learn how to evaluate gate access, housing options, daily routines and long-term value before choosing where to live.
South Huntsville is a useful starting point for buyers considering access from the eastern and southern sides of the installation. Madison offers a broad suburban housing market and access to the western employment corridor. Jones Valley appeals to buyers considering established Huntsville neighborhoods and mountain views.
Harvest and Monrovia offer additional suburban and larger-lot options northwest of Huntsville. Athens expands the search westward into Limestone County. Hampton Cove and Owens Cross Roads offer eastern valley settings, but the cross-town commute deserves careful testing.
There is no single best community for every Redstone Arsenal employee. Your actual work building, authorized gate, arrival time, budget and housing preferences should determine the shortlist.
Redstone Arsenal is a large federal installation. Working for the Army, NASA, the FBI, a defense contractor or another tenant does not necessarily mean entering through the same gate or traveling to the same part of the installation.
This guide focuses on the practical differences between surrounding communities rather than assigning subjective rankings to neighborhoods. It is designed to help relocating buyers make informed housing decisions.
A home can look close to Redstone Arsenal on a map and still involve a longer drive than a property several miles farther away. The installation’s size, gate locations, road network and your specific workplace all affect the commute.
Redstone’s main gate is open 24 hours a day. Its northern location makes it an important reference point for many buyers evaluating Madison, west Huntsville and northern routes.
These gates can be relevant to South Huntsville and eastern approaches, depending on where you work and which entrances your credentials and schedule permit.
This access point may be worth evaluating for commuters coming from the west, including parts of Madison, eastern Limestone County and Athens.
Redstone Arsenal announced that beginning November 2, 2026, Gates 1, 3 and 7 would operate for both inbound and outbound traffic from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday. Gate 9 remains the 24-hour main gate.
Gate hours, access rules and temporary restrictions can change. Always confirm current information with the official Redstone Arsenal Access Control page before relying on a particular entrance.
For broader employer-specific information, see our Moving to Huntsville for Redstone Arsenal guide . We are also preparing a dedicated Redstone Arsenal commute guide with additional route-planning considerations.
Each area offers a different combination of housing, location, character and everyday convenience. These are starting points for research, not neighborhood rankings or guarantees about commute time.
Madison is frequently part of a Redstone Arsenal home search because of its western location, established subdivisions, newer developments and access to major employment corridors.
Buyers can explore traditional suburban neighborhoods, townhomes, larger properties and newer construction. Downtown Madison adds a different setting, with local businesses and a historic Main Street.
The key is to evaluate the specific property. A Madison mailing address can cover a broad geographic area, and the route to your workplace can differ substantially between neighborhoods.
For a more detailed comparison, see our upcoming Huntsville vs. Madison guide .
South Huntsville deserves a close look when your workplace is accessible from an eastern or southern Redstone Arsenal gate.
Housing options include established subdivisions, mid-century homes, renovated properties, townhomes and newer development in selected areas. Some locations offer mountain scenery and access to outdoor recreation.
The area’s range of housing ages is an advantage for buyers who want choices, but it also means that condition, renovation quality and comparable sales deserve close attention.
Jones Valley offers an established residential setting in southeast Huntsville, with distinctive topography and views of the surrounding mountains in parts of the area.
Homes vary considerably by street, age, lot and renovation history. For buyers comparing Jones Valley with newer subdivisions, it is important to distinguish architectural character and location from maintenance requirements and future resale considerations.
Although Jones Valley is within Huntsville, it should not automatically be assumed to provide the shortest commute to every Redstone Arsenal workplace.
Harvest and Monrovia expand the home search northwest of Huntsville. Depending on the location, buyers can find established subdivisions, newer neighborhoods and properties with more land.
This part of the metro is worth evaluating if your housing priorities include a particular lot size, floor plan or suburban setting that may be harder to find in more central locations.
Because the area spans different roads, postal addresses and school jurisdictions, decisions should be based on the exact property rather than the community name alone.
Athens is a separate city west of Madison with a historic downtown, established neighborhoods, substantial new construction and a range of property types.
Buyers looking for different lot sizes, home designs or a distinct small-city environment often include Athens in their comparison. The Canebrake area illustrates one of the city’s more amenity-oriented residential settings.
The tradeoff is that many Athens addresses are farther from Redstone Arsenal. The route to the western or northern side of the installation may be workable for some schedules, while other work locations can require a significantly longer drive.
A different purchase price does not automatically mean a better overall value. Consider property taxes, insurance, utilities, maintenance, HOA dues and the recurring cost of a longer commute.
See our upcoming Athens vs. Madison comparison and Huntsville cost-of-living guide .
Hampton Cove and the Owens Cross Roads area offer a different geographic setting east of central Huntsville, with mountain scenery, residential subdivisions and access to recreation in the surrounding area.
Buyers may be drawn to particular home styles, lot configurations, golf amenities or the eastern valley landscape. Those preferences should be weighed against the route to Redstone Arsenal.
The commute may involve crossing parts of Huntsville before reaching an authorized Arsenal gate. For a daily on-site employee, that is a meaningful consideration rather than a minor detail.
This table describes broad characteristics. It does not substitute for evaluating individual listings, school-zone boundaries or routes to your specific workplace.
| Community | Housing options | Commute consideration | Useful for comparing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Madison | Established subdivisions, townhomes, newer homes | Western and northern approaches; route varies by address | Suburban housing and west-side amenities |
| South Huntsville | Established homes, renovations, selected new development | Potential eastern or southern gate access | Housing age, lot character and gate choice |
| Jones Valley | Established homes and varied architectural styles | Cross-town route and authorized gate | Neighborhood setting and existing-home value |
| Harvest / Monrovia | Subdivisions, newer homes and some larger lots | Northwest approach and peak-hour traffic | Lot size and home-style options |
| Athens | Historic homes, new construction and varied lots | Longer west-to-Arsenal journey for many addresses | Property choices and total commuting cost |
| Hampton Cove / Owens Cross Roads | Subdivisions, golf-area properties and newer homes | East-to-west route through Huntsville | Eastern valley setting and residential amenities |
A comparison of Huntsville versus Madison or Athens versus Madison can help narrow the decision once you know which areas meet your commuting requirements.
A home with a lower asking price can involve higher maintenance expenses, a longer commute or substantial renovation needs. A newer home may reduce some immediate repair concerns but introduce builder premiums, HOA dues or competition from future construction.
When comparing properties in different communities, review recent comparable sales, lot characteristics, finished square footage, condition, upgrades and nearby competition.
Our forthcoming new construction homes in Huntsville guide will address builder incentives, lot premiums and comparisons with existing homes.
School district and attendance-zone boundaries do not always follow postal city names. A home with a Madison mailing address, for example, should not be assumed to fall within a particular school system.
If schools are important to your search, verify the property with the appropriate school district before making an offer. Review official programs, enrollment rules and published performance information based on your own priorities.
See our forthcoming Huntsville-area schools guide for research tools and district information.

Hampton Cove is east of central Huntsville, while Redstone Arsenal occupies a large area west and southwest of much of the city. The drive can involve cross-town travel. Test the route to your workplace rather than relying on straight-line distance.
