Moving from Colorado Springs to Huntsville is no longer a hypothetical scenario for U.S. Space Command households. Permanent operational personnel began relocating to Redstone Arsenal in April 2026, and U.S. Space Command says the move will continue in phases while mission operations remain uninterrupted. Huntsville is a substantially smaller city than Colorado Springs, with a different climate and housing market, but it places relocating households inside one of the country’s densest aerospace, defense and engineering ecosystems.
This page was researched and updated August 24, 2026. Market figures are dated where they appear because housing conditions change.
On April 15, 2026, personnel assigned to U.S. Space Command’s J2 Intelligence Directorate relocated from Colorado Springs to Redstone Arsenal. U.S. Space Command described them as among the first personnel to make the permanent move. Two weeks later, on April 29, Gen. Stephen Whiting announced operational control of the command’s first dedicated operational facility at Redstone Arsenal.
The transition is intentionally phased. U.S. Space Command has said that its first operational element at Redstone, the Joint Intelligence Support Element, is expected to become an 80-person team when fully transitioned. The command has also stated a goal of having at least half of the command operating from Redstone by the end of 2028 while a purpose-built headquarters is developed.
For a household in Colorado Springs, that means the right moving date may depend on assignment timing, civilian employment decisions, school calendars, the sale of a Colorado home and whether one spouse moves ahead of the rest of the household. A relocation plan should be built around your actual orders and family timeline rather than a generic headline about the headquarters move.

These are two very different communities. Colorado Springs is a larger Front Range city shaped by elevation, military installations and mountain access. Huntsville is a fast-growing North Alabama city built around aerospace, defense, engineering, advanced manufacturing and research. The best comparison is not which city is universally “better”; it is which parts of Huntsville best support your work location, housing budget and daily routine.
| Factor | Colorado Springs | Huntsville / North Alabama |

One of the most common mistakes in an interstate move is turning a broad statement like “Huntsville is less expensive” into permission to overpay for the first house that looks inexpensive relative to Colorado. The relevant question is not what a Huntsville home costs compared with Colorado Springs. It is whether the specific North Alabama property is supported by its own local comparable sales.
That distinction matters in a market with new construction, resale subdivisions, rural acreage, older city neighborhoods and rapidly changing development patterns all within a relatively short drive. Two homes with similar square footage can have very different market support because of lot size, age, renovations, zoning, commute access, builder incentives or neighborhood-specific demand.
North Alabama relocation decisions make more sense when you work backward from commute patterns. Redstone Arsenal is large, and a drive that looks short on a regional map can feel different depending on the gate you use, school traffic, construction and where your office sits on the Arsenal.
The broadest mix of established neighborhoods, infill, newer subdivisions, downtown-adjacent living and access to major employment centers. South Huntsville can be particularly convenient for many Redstone commuters.
A major relocation destination west of Huntsville with extensive newer housing and strong access to Research Park, I-565 and western approaches to Redstone. Exact commute depends heavily on destination and time of day.
East and southeast of Huntsville, with mountain scenery and a broad range of newer and established neighborhoods. It can be a compelling lifestyle choice when the commute works for your specific job location.
Established neighborhoods, newer development and quick access to shopping, trails and many Redstone approaches. A strong place to start for households prioritizing Arsenal access.
Northwest of Huntsville with a mix of subdivisions, larger lots and continued residential growth. Commute planning is important because daily routes can funnel toward major east-west corridors.
Farther west, often attractive to households seeking a different housing mix or more space. It can work especially well when one household member works west of Huntsville, but it is not the default answer for every Redstone commuter.
North of Huntsville, Meridianville offers a growing mix of newer subdivisions and established homes. It can be worth comparing for buyers seeking more space while keeping access to Huntsville and Redstone within a practical commute.
A productive interstate search should begin with a structured intake rather than a generic property portal. Jason can use your work location, housing budget, preferred lot and home type, expected length of ownership, commute tolerance and timing to narrow North Alabama into a manageable set of areas.
Once the search is focused, remote buyers can use live video walk-throughs, neighborhood context, document review, local vendor coordination and targeted in-person touring to reduce wasted trips. The objective is not to persuade you to buy remotely. It is to make sure that if you do, the decision is based on more than listing photography.
If you are flying in from Colorado Springs, the most useful weekend is designed to help you understand North Alabama’s geography first and homes second. The itinerary below is a framework; it should be customized to your work site, family schedule and priorities.
Drive the main employment corridors, see where Redstone Arsenal sits relative to Huntsville and Madison, and identify two or three communities that deserve deeper attention.
Tour neighborhoods and housing types before committing the day to individual listings. Look at traffic patterns, grocery and retail access, construction, lot sizes, age of housing and how each area feels at street level.
See homes that test your real tradeoffs: newer vs. established, commute vs. space, subdivision amenities vs. acreage, and renovated resale vs. builder inventory.
Use the second pass to check noise, roads, neighborhood condition, lot orientation, nearby construction and the features that are easy to miss during a fast first showing.
Even if you do not write an offer that weekend, you should leave knowing which communities fit, what your money buys, which compromises are acceptable and what should trigger the next trip or remote showing.
Alabama does have an individual state income tax. The Alabama Department of Revenue publishes graduated individual rates of 2%, 4% and 5%, depending on taxable income and filing status. Colorado currently uses a flat 4.4% individual income tax rate.
The more meaningful relocation calculation combines state income taxes with property taxes, homeowner’s insurance, utilities, commuting, housing payment and any change in compensation. Military and federal civilian households can also have residency, home-of-record, relocation-incentive or taxable-reimbursement questions that deserve advice from a qualified tax professional.

A lower purchase price can create room in the budget, but the right comparison is the complete monthly and ownership picture.
Relocating households often begin with a school-system boundary in mind. In the Huntsville area, that can mean Huntsville City Schools, Madison City Schools, Madison County Schools or Limestone County Schools depending on the property. Attendance zones can change, and postal addresses do not reliably tell you the school system.
Jason can help you understand which public-school system serves a property and point you to the official district resources, but your family’s school preferences are personal. The safest approach is to review official zoning tools, program information and transportation details directly with the district rather than relying on rankings or generalized neighborhood labels.
Colorado Springs gives you high-elevation views, a much drier climate and immediate Front Range access. Huntsville trades that for green hills, hardwood forests, lakes, the Tennessee River, longer warm-weather seasons and a more humid climate.
The adjustment is noticeable. Summers in North Alabama are hotter and more humid than Colorado Springs. Winters are generally milder, but severe weather awareness is part of life in the Southeast. Many Colorado transplants find that outdoor recreation changes rather than disappears: hiking shifts from alpine and Front Range terrain to Monte Sano and regional trail systems, while boating, fishing and lake weekends become much more accessible.
The region also has a strong engineering and defense identity that can feel familiar to Colorado Springs households. Redstone Arsenal, NASA Marshall Space Flight Center, the FBI’s Redstone campus, Cummings Research Park and a deep contractor network create a professional ecosystem that is unusually concentrated for a city Huntsville’s size.

Work from actual orders, reporting dates, employment decisions and household needs. Decide whether the move happens together or in phases.
Estimate likely proceeds from your Colorado Springs home and decide how much, if any, you want to deploy into the Alabama purchase.
Match work location, commute tolerance, housing type, price range and lifestyle before building a showing list.
Use a scouting trip or live video to test communities and property tradeoffs, then make offers only with local market context.
A successful interstate move involves more than choosing a house. Start early with the Colorado sale or lease, lender planning, school and records research, mover quotes, utilities, insurance, travel logistics and the final Alabama setup. The checklist below is designed as a practical planning aid rather than a substitute for advice from your lender, tax professional, insurer, employer or relocation office.
Yes. U.S. Space Command says the transition to Redstone Arsenal is underway. Permanent operational personnel began relocating in April 2026, and the command took operational control of its first dedicated operational facility at Redstone on April 29, 2026. The broader transition will occur in phases.
Plan on roughly 1,200 to 1,300 road miles depending on your exact origin, destination and chosen route. Long-distance moving companies commonly estimate the route at about 1,250 miles. Always use current navigation for the actual drive because construction and route recommendations change.
Broad market data generally show lower home prices in the Huntsville area, but the useful comparison is the specific home and neighborhood. In July 2026, elevateMLS reported a $460,000 median sale price across its Pikes Peak market, while HAAR reported a $349,000 July median for Huntsville and Madison County. The reporting areas and property mix differ, so these are market snapshots rather than direct valuation equivalents.
Yes. Alabama uses graduated individual income-tax rates of 2%, 4% and 5%, depending on taxable income and filing status. Colorado currently uses a flat 4.4% individual income-tax rate. Consult a tax professional for your specific residency and military or federal employment situation.
There is no single correct community. South Huntsville, Madison, Huntsville proper, Hampton Cove/Owens Cross Roads, Harvest/Monrovia and parts of Limestone County can all make sense depending on your work site, gate, housing preferences and commute tolerance. Start with the specific work location and then compare communities.
Yes. Many parts of the search and transaction can be handled remotely through live video showings, electronic documents, inspection coordination and local vendor support. Whether you should buy without seeing the property in person depends on your comfort level and circumstances.
It depends on financing, equity, timing and risk tolerance. Some households need sale proceeds for the next purchase; others can buy first. The best sequence should be coordinated with your lender and both real-estate markets before you commit to dates.
The Huntsville Area Association of REALTORS reported a July 2026 median sale price of $349,000 for Huntsville and Madison County, 759 homes sold, 2,688 homes on market and an average 43 days on market. Conditions vary by neighborhood, price range and property type.
The Pikes Peak Association of REALTORS/elevateMLS July 2026 market snapshot reported 1,359 closed sales, a $460,000 median sale price across all property types and 52 average days on market.
Very different. Colorado Springs is high elevation and comparatively dry. Huntsville is lower elevation with a humid subtropical climate, hotter and more humid summers, greener vegetation and generally milder winters.
Yes. Jason holds the Military Relocation Professional credential and works with buyers and sellers moving into and out of North Alabama. His appraisal background adds an additional layer of property-value analysis for relocating buyers.
Know your approximate budget, reporting or move window, likely work location, desired home type, must-haves and commute tolerance. That allows the trip to focus on a small number of communities instead of spending a weekend driving across the entire metro.
Tell Jason where you expect to work, when you may move, what you own in Colorado and what you want your next home to look like. The goal of the first conversation is simply to turn a very large relocation into a manageable plan.
