North Alabama Relocation Guide

Moving to Huntsville for U.S. Space Command

If U.S. Space Command is bringing your career or household to Huntsville, this guide will help you understand Redstone Arsenal, compare communities, think through your commute and prepare to buy a home in North Alabama.

Huntsville is already home to one of the nation’s largest concentrations of aerospace, defense, intelligence and engineering activity. The transition of U.S. Space Command to Redstone Arsenal adds another major mission to that ecosystem.

A Major Transition Is Underway

U.S. Space Command Is Establishing Its Future at Redstone Arsenal

For households connected to U.S. Space Command, the move to Huntsville is no longer simply a future possibility. Personnel and operational elements have begun transitioning to Redstone Arsenal.

U.S. Space Command identifies Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville as its designated headquarters location. Personnel assigned to the command’s J2 Intelligence Directorate relocated to Redstone Arsenal on April 15, 2026, becoming some of the first USSPACECOM personnel to make the permanent move.

On April 29, 2026, U.S. Space Command announced operational control of its first dedicated operational facility at Redstone Arsenal, another significant milestone in the transition from Colorado Springs to Huntsville.

What this means for relocating households:
The transition is occurring in stages. Your housing timeline may not look exactly like another employee’s, so the best relocation plan begins with your reporting schedule, work location, preferred commute, housing needs and budget.

The Transition

From Colorado Springs to Redstone Arsenal

U.S. Space Command began establishing a permanent presence at Redstone quickly after the September 2025 decision to move the command to Huntsville.

According to U.S. Space Command, a small team was on the ground in Huntsville within 24 hours of the September 2, 2025 announcement. The Redstone Transition Team was established at Redstone Arsenal by the end of 2025 to prepare facilities for the command.

The transition reached another important stage in April 2026 when J2 Intelligence Directorate personnel relocated permanently to Redstone and the command subsequently took operational control of its first dedicated operational facility.

For anyone planning a move, the important takeaway is that relocation decisions should be based on your own assignment and timing rather than assuming the entire command will relocate at once.

Making the Move

Colorado Springs to Huntsville

Moving from Colorado Springs to Huntsville means learning a very different housing market, geography and commuting pattern.

Instead of choosing a home based simply on mileage from Redstone, relocating buyers should consider which installation gate they expect to use, their normal work schedule, access to I-565 and other major corridors, housing preferences and how close they want to be to Huntsville’s employment and activity centers.

We’ve created a separate guide specifically for households making the Colorado-to-Alabama transition, including housing, taxes, climate, lifestyle and practical moving considerations.

Housing & Location

Where to Live When You Work at Redstone Arsenal

There isn’t one correct place to live when working at Redstone Arsenal. Several North Alabama communities can provide practical access to the installation, and each offers a different combination of housing, location, commute and amenities.

A useful starting point is to decide what matters most to you: proximity to a particular Redstone gate, access to Research Park or downtown Huntsville, newer construction, an established neighborhood, more space, or proximity to a particular part of North Alabama.

Getting to Work

Understand the Redstone Arsenal Commute Before You Choose a Home

Looking at the distance between a house and Redstone Arsenal does not tell the whole story. Redstone is a large installation, and the gate you use can materially affect your daily route.

Gate 9 on Rideout Road is Redstone’s main gate and is currently listed by the installation as open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Other gates, including Gate 1 on Martin Road and Gate 3 on Redstone Road, operate on more limited schedules.

That makes your likely work location and gate important considerations when comparing Madison, Huntsville, South Huntsville, Hampton Cove, Harvest/Meridianville and Athens.

Gate schedules and access procedures can change. Always verify current information directly with Redstone Arsenal before relying on a particular gate or schedule.

Redstone Arsenal Is Part of a Much Larger Huntsville Aerospace & Defense Ecosystem

Relocating for Space Command may bring you to Redstone, but it is worth understanding the larger geography around the installation.

Cummings Research Park and the areas surrounding Redstone contain a substantial concentration of aerospace, engineering, technology and defense-related employers. For households with two careers, contractor relationships or the possibility of changing employers in the future, access to both Redstone and the Research Park corridor can be an important housing consideration.

This is one reason a relocation conversation should start with more than a list of houses. Understanding where each household member expects to work can change which parts of the Huntsville metro make practical sense.

House-Hunting Trips & Arrival

Planning a Huntsville House-Hunting Trip

Huntsville International Airport provides a convenient arrival point for buyers flying into North Alabama for a house-hunting trip.

If your time in Huntsville is limited, organize the trip around decisions rather than simply trying to see as many homes as possible. A productive relocation visit can include:

  • Driving your likely Redstone commute during realistic traffic conditions
  • Comparing several communities rather than assuming one location is the answer
  • Touring both resale homes and new construction when appropriate
  • Understanding differences in comparable sales and pricing between areas
  • Identifying the areas you would be comfortable buying in remotely if necessary

Verify Before You Go

Installation access requirements and gate schedules are security and operational matters and may change. Use Redstone Arsenal’s official website for current instructions rather than relying on older relocation information.

You Don’t Have to Be in Huntsville for Every Step of the Home-Buying Process

Space Command relocations may require buyers to make housing decisions before they have completely transitioned to Alabama.

A well-organized remote purchase can combine video showings, neighborhood and commute research, electronic documents, inspections and local market analysis so that your limited time in Huntsville is spent on the decisions that benefit most from being here in person.

The first step is narrowing the search geographically. Once we know your likely work location, commute preferences, budget, housing needs and timing, we can concentrate on the parts of North Alabama that fit those requirements rather than sending an overwhelming list of properties across the entire metro.

A relocation search can include:

  • Community and commute comparisons
  • Live or recorded video home tours
  • Comparable-sales analysis
  • New-construction comparisons
  • Inspection coordination
  • Remote document review and signatures
  • Coordination around reporting and moving dates

Buying in an Unfamiliar Market Requires More Than Finding a House You Like

When you move from Colorado Springs or another part of the country, you may have little context for how one North Alabama neighborhood, subdivision or property compares with another.

Jason Roberts is both a REALTOR® and Certified Residential Appraiser. That combination brings an additional valuation perspective to the home-buying process, particularly when reviewing comparable sales, neighborhood pricing and the differences between properties in a market you are still learning.

An appraisal background does not replace a lender’s appraisal or guarantee what a property will ultimately appraise for. It does, however, provide another layer of experience when evaluating the market information available before making an offer.

Start with the relocation questions

Before focusing on individual listings, we’ll work through the decisions that shape the search:

  • When are you expected in Huntsville?
  • Where do you expect to work?
  • Which Redstone access points matter to your commute?
  • What monthly payment or purchase range are you targeting?
  • Resale, new construction or either?
  • How much space do you need?
  • Will you visit Huntsville before purchasing?
